Computer Turns Itself on, Won't Boot
« on: September 29, 2013, 06:50:12 PM »
Ok, this is an odd one I can't figure out. We have a 6 year old system that only gets used maybe once a week or so. The other morning I found it had turned itself on. Turned the monitor on, but the OS wasn't loaded. Held the power button down, but it didn't do anything so I had to manually turn the power supply off with the switch in the back. I can turn the switch on and the power supply will turn itself on but won't boot or do anything. I have to either unplug it or turn the power supply switch off. i've never had any problems with this system since I built it. Any of you guys know where I should start?

Sounds like a bad motherboard. I don't think there's really any testing for it though. You just have to rule everything else out.

You don't see anything come up on the screen? The computer doesn't POST at all?

Yea won't post at all. The power supply remains on and the power/HDD lights remain lit, the power or reset button do nothing. My luck a capacitor probably popped and fubared the motherboard.

Hah, yea this computer everybody else uses  Unplugged all the accessory cards and everything, still done it. Unplugged the power connectors to the motherboard; plugged the power supply in and the fucker is running. Gonna see if I can scrounged up a spare power supply. Fuck, the Thermaltake in there was fucking expensive!

So, likely a bad PS. Didn't have another working unit so I plugged it up in an old unit. Some odd reason it didn't turn on by itself but when powered up it did all kinds of funky shit. Didn't have a monitor plugged to it, but it kept repowering itself like it didn't even try and post. I'll order another unit when I can, but this is the second unit this particular outlet fried, so some wiring needs to be done on my part.

If it's still wonky with another PSU, it doesn't sound like the PSU is the problem to me.

Doesn't sound like the PSU at all.  Sounds like your BIOS is shot.

Forgot I made this thread. Turned out the power surge I had took out the PSU and Mobo. Sucks it was a really good computer, was older, but worked perfect. Luckily I have an old laptop that they can use.
