[Movie] Elysium
« on: August 13, 2013, 07:36:26 PM »
Elysium is a 2013 sci-fi/action flick starring Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley. It was directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Elysium  takes place in the year 2154, in a society where Earth's rich and powerful have created and moved to their float-in-space haven, called Elysium.  On Elysium, there is no crime, there is no poverty, there are no diseases.  This means that everything and everyone left on Earth is poverty-stricken, desolate, impoverished, and still working for the rich.

Matt Damon plays Max, an ex-con factory worker who struggles to get by. One day at the factory, Max winds up being baked in some sort of nuclear microwave, becomes highly irradiated, and is given a week to live. His goal? Get to Elysium illegally to be cured of his illness.

Sharlto Copley plays Kruger, who is an assassin sent to kill Max before he can get to space.

This movie felt pretty similar to Blomkamp's last movie, District 9. It had a lot of strong political undertones but in the end the focus was the struggle of the haves vs the have-nots. Overall, I really enjoyed it. It was GLORIOUS to see on the big screen, and the special effects were insanely good. The ship Elysium looked 100% real in every shot..you can really get immersed in this movie.

8/10..not perfect, but a great sci-fi that I'll pick up on BD when it comes out.
