[Movie] Spring Breakers
« on: June 26, 2013, 02:32:55 PM »
Sick at home today, and decided to finally watch Spring Breakers. This is director Harmony Korine's first big release since the absurdly bizarre Gummo over a decade ago.

Spring Breakers follows 4 college girls who go to Florida for spring break and get mixed up in the wrong crowd. Shock value? The 4 girls are: Korine's wife Rachel and a few Disney child stars. The film's "bad guy" is played by James Franco.

Spring Breakers is surprisingly provocative. I look back on my exploits from college and this movie strangely rings a lot of bells. I shared the same mindset of many of the characters. This is an interesting social commentary as well as a fun "sensory overload" type of movie.

There's action, suspense, copious amounts of nudity, soundtrack by Skrillex, and very good acting.  Franco playing a dirty Souf rapper/drug runner is as humorous as it is believable.

All in all, this was pretty good. I've never really seen another movie like it...it's bizarre. Worth a watch. 8/10

After Gummo I was under the impression anything this man ever went on to direct would be bizarre

I really want to see this for some reason....not sure why  But your review makes me feel a lot better about that desire.

It's weird because there's no one in the movie whose side you want to take. Can't remember another movie that has approached characters this way.

It's still in theaters some places. Not out on video for a couple more weeks.

Yeah I watched it again last night and it was just as good. The scene from inside the car during the robbery was one of the most excellent pieces of filmmaking I've seen in a while.

If my girlfriend hadn't convinced me to watch it, I wouldn't have. I'm glad I did. Biggest surprise film in a while.

Watching this flick again since I'm off work and have some very necessary pain killers in my body (via this:http://anti-rice.com/smf/index.php?topic=9420.msg156867#msg156867, not a relapse ) and thus far I think I'm enjoying it a lot more the second time.around, the surrel shots and editing are great, really happy it's holding up to a second viewing.

Yeah I've watched it a few times since my original post,  and I still enjoy it. It's a little weird, but I think the character progression and pacing are intriguing and fun to follow.

I watched it and I really enjoyed it. James Franco is creepy in all the right parts, but Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson really steal the show. Two people who live in a shithole and will stop at nothing to avoid going back. I can relate to that, which is why I guess I took the movie a little more personally. I'm not going to go term-paper analytical like I do with zombie films, but I love how jarring and disorienting a lot of it was, it definitely went right along with the tone of the movie. Also the symphonic arrangements of Skrillex music was cool.
