Laptop turned off while gaming and turn back on
« on: March 24, 2013, 09:26:03 PM »
I'm basically asking for a second opinion besides my own.

First it's a Toshiba Qosmio x305 q705

2 known issues of these laptops.
  a. Overheats and requires opening it up for full blow out about every 6 months.
  b. The overheating causes the video card to pull away from the motherboard and damaging the MB.

Symptoms: Was playing Allods when the computer just shut off. I thought it might be a normal overheat issue even though I've not seen any temps above 60 c lately.

I tried to turn it back on and nothing happened. This is when I started really looking. The red lights for AC and battery charged were not on. Usually they are while on AC even when system is turned off.

What I've done.

Started by taking the battery out and restart. Nothing.
Unplugged AC and put battery back in and attempt to restart. Nothing
Took battery back out, hit the power button 10 times and then holding power button for 30 seconds. Reinserted battery and AC. Nothing.
Repeated above steps again.

Took laptop apart and checked all connections. Looked for shorts and bad chips/capacitors. Nothing out noticed.

At this point I have a hard time believing both the AC brick and battery went bad at the same time, though I currently have no way to test either.

I'm leaning towards a bad    motherboard.

Any other opinions?

Battery and charger both going bad at the same time is next to impossible. You can check the charger with a voltmeter if you still fancy that possibility but I wouldn't even spend the time. Everything about that sounds like a bad motherboard. Overheating is bound to eventually take something out.

You don't get any lights at all?

Nah nothing. No lights at all.

I'm pretty much settled on the motherboard but always the optimist I hope there's something I missed.

Seems so weird to have it completely die though. Usually you would at least get a light or two but the laptop won't attempt to come on.

Nope. I was playing and it just turned off.

Now it does nothing.

I've had CPUs go out and yeah it's always a sort of winding down til it quits entirely.

Never had one just up and quit though.

Didn't get the tell tale smell of ozone from a fried    part. No pops or puffs of smoke. Just off and nothing.

Sounds like what mine was doing recently....and I still haven't tracked down the problem...I'm taking it to Marshall this weekend to have my fiancee's brother in law take a look at it since he's way more knowledgable with computers than I am.

Yours turns back on. ;-) This wasn't a thermal shutdown.

Actually had a desktop do this once. Motherboard was gone and turns out the overheat had actually shorted a connection within the plastic and cracked the pathway. Didn't actually see it till the board was out and was tracing it out looking for a popped capacitor.
