USB Mouse and Keyboard stopped working.
« on: February 04, 2013, 07:45:10 PM »
we moved our computer out from the wall and unplugged everything.  All was fine when it was unplugged, however, after plugging everything back in just like it was the USB mouse(mice) and keyboard will not work.  Same mouse will work in the laptop.
Can't do anything obviously without one or the other.  We are at a loss.

I just threw away an older mouse and keyboard that plugged in the old fashioned way.  Am I going to have to track one of those down to fix this?  What went wrong?

Thanks guys.

Is it showing in Device Manager?

Open the Start Menu, right-click on Computer, and select Manage:

Click on Device Manager on the left side, then look for "Mice and other pointing devices":

If it's not there, I would say you might have an issue with the USB port.

I'm assuming it's an optical mouse. Does it get power when it's plugged in? Try different USB ports. If it's normally plugged in at the back of the PC, try a front port.

all 8 usb ports have power.  for some reason it wants to install everything that gets plugged in, even tho it's already been installed.
however, with no way to manipulate anything on the screen, there's no way for me to tell it 'next'.
Thanks for the help, if/when I find a mouse/keyboard that will plug in without a usb I'll try that.

For some reason, that didn't even occur to me. I forgot that nothing was working so you can't navigate the menus.

I'm not really sure what else to try other than getting your hands on a spare keyboard or mouse.

Don't feel bad, I'm the one goin thru it and I keep forgetting about it too.  I keep thinking of ways around it but they all involve USB ports.
It's like walking around the house in a power outage. You know the power is out but you keep flippin light switches on.

You can probably find a PS/2 mouse and keyboard on Craigslist for next to nothing.

After a suggestion from a friend, we got it figured out.
we're running windows XP and apparently if you don't put the plug back in the exact same port it doesn't recognize the hardware and thinks it has to reinstall.
with 6 ports back there, it was very easy to plug it into the wrong one.  We tried all 6 one at a time (we think again) and found the 'right' one.
all is well.

Yes, that's the case, but it should have been able to reinstall without any issues. Once you've installed a device on a machine, even Windows XP, it now has the drivers and should reinstall easily if you plug it in to a different USB port.

Use your keyboard commands to navigate.  Tape or arrow keys move the selection between continue and cancel, or next and cancel, and space bar is like a mouse click.
