Which Laptop?
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:48:31 PM »
Suggest a laptop for me. I need something to get through the rest of school, so less then two years (the longer it lasts the better). I don't play games on the computer much (ever really), so nothing crazy is needed. Which brands should I look at? Which brands to avoid? My laptop also doubles as my home computer as well.

I just need it to look up porn, do school work, surfing, etc.

You got $600 bucks.... now GO! Good laptop, good deal.

P.S. I really like a light up keyboard, makes it easier to type with one hand in the dark.....

Look at ASUS,  I got mine for 5-something and it performs well on those tasks, especially on the porn

Asus is okay. Avoid Acer at all costs. I'm partial to Dell from my own personal experiences. Toshiba is supposed to be good. Lenovo is pretty good.

Dell is good as well, I had a Dell laptop before I became and ASUS fanboi and it lasted way longer than you would expect a laptop to.

I like this one, I think. What do y'all think?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230537

I looked through Dell, Toshiba, and Asus. Asus seems to have the best deals with decent reviews.

I'm currently using a Toshiba Satellite A665 (I think) and it has served me well, but the USB ports have shorts, the screen has some messed up lines on it, and my dogs pawed it once and ripped off the "," and right "Alt" key. I had a Lenovo, the motherboard crashed on me pretty quick. Never had a Dell laptop, but they are expensive in comparison.

How quick do you need? If you can wait a couple weeks, I highly recommend stalking Slickdeals.net. Just check it a couple times a day and watch for a good laptop deal to hit the front page.

I've heard Toshibas can have heat issues. I know Kalgorn says avoid Acer, but my Gateway has been solid for the past two years...

I still say Asus is the best brand if you're on a budget.

Yes! My Toshiba will get hot if not careful with ventilation. I normally just use it with the fan corner just hanging off the edge of the table, helps to keep it cool. It's definitely not good for actually setting on your lap, haha.

Yes, Toshibas are known to run hot. That's not necessarily a problem but it could develop in to one. A cooling pad would be inexpensive insurance if you're concerned.

No need to borrow more, I'm just tight. I don't like spending money.

I've had two acers, both higher end laptops, not a spec of trouble from both.  3 co-workers have acers as well, and have had acers for years, no problems.  Most of our customers walk in with Acers or Dells and speak highly of both.  Not quite sure why you don't like Acers.

The lower end ones seem to be the ones that have problems.

Meaty is right. The lower tier (the ones that most people will buy) are shit. My dad had one and within two months, the display was having issues at boot. It was replaced under warranty and did it again within the next year. It's partially personal experience and partially word of mouth.

I bought a fairly inexpensive Dell Vostro (business line) for my wife and it's been pretty rock solid. She's had it for four years with only the battery, charger, and harddrive replaced. And the harddrive is only because she uses it on her lap typically with a blanket or something.

I've had my Toshiba Qosmio X305 Q705 since 2009. I haven't replaced anything on it yet. It does have heating issues, and I have had to crack it open about twice a year to clean it, but other than that? Great.

Only thing I've changed was upgrading to Win 7 64 bit.

Oh, I don't buy low end laptops from anyone because of shitty quality IMO.  Desktops I'll buy low end because replacement parts are cheap and easy if something breaks.

The Cheaper Asii aren't terrible (my 10" eee survived both 2 years of college and my drunkeness) but yeah, I would decide your laptop budget, then pay 100 bucks more just to be safe
