Laptop Randomly shutting off
« on: November 13, 2012, 07:12:10 PM »
My Laptop, which is a less than year old Asus with a Core i5 running Windows 7, has all of a sudden started just randomly shutting itself off during use. I'll hear a click that seems to be coming from the Hard Drive, then it shuts off and immediately boots back up to the Windows Did Not Shut Down Properly screen. I've booted into Safe Mode and poked around and I haven't seen anything weird, and I haven't installed any weird shit either. Could it be a faulty hard drive? Or is there something else I need to be looking at software wise?

It's very possible it's the harddrive. Laptops tend to eat harddrives quicker than normal because of the buildup of heat due to components being crammed into little boxes. Find out what brand of drive it is and download a drive test utility from the appropriate manufacturer's website.

If everything checks out there, download Memtest and run that.

If there's no memory issues, it might be shutting down due to heat. Download Speedfan and keep it running at all times. Monitor your temps to see if anything looks too high. An i5 at idle should be in the 40-50* range and upwards of 80* under really, really heavy load. That's for a desktop PC but I assume a laptop would be similar.

I would check heat before I went through all that trouble. Start simple and work to the more in depth parts.

Start with speed fan and see what kind of heat the thing is generating. That, in my experience, has been the cause of 75-80% of all shutdowns.

The reason I went with the other two first is that he's hearing a click from the harddrive before it reboots.

Some laptop hard drives do make a click sound when they shut down, it's not an uncommon sound.  Heat was my first thought too.

Sure. But he's claiming it clicks first, then shuts down.

Sometimes it's more simultaneous, *click* dead, not *click*.....dead. I'll check everything when I get off tonight, I got wrapped up in Halo 4 last night.

When you use your laptop, where is it?  In your lap, on a pillow, etc?  Do you have a cooling pad underneath it?

It's usually on my Lap, Ottoman or a wire mesh dog cage next to my chair. I don't have a Cooling Pad, I was thinking that might be a problem.

Your Ottoman and lap are two definite no-nos, but sitting on a wire mesh dog cage should let it breathe. Is there any dust on the intake underneath it?

Appears that this bitch is getting too hot....well thats somewhat of a relief compared to the thought of replacing the whole damn hard drive. Guess I better get a lap desk or cooling pad or something.

Does it ever overheat when it's sitting on a hard surface? It shouldn't. If it does, you need to open it up and clean it out. The fan or exhaust port is probably all gunked up.

No, it usually doesn't shut off on the coffee table or the dog kennel, only on the Ottoman. I may open it up this weekend and clean it though just to be safe.

Ottoman is keeping air from blowing underneath it. I wouldn't open it up unless it's over heating while on a hard surface.

If you can easily open it up, it wouldn't hurt to take a peak and blow out whatever dust you find. Just be careful. If it seems like it will be difficult, then skip it because it can sometimes be very easy to break little connectors and clips.

Ok, it likely isn't getting proper air flow.  Heat is a HUGE HUGE killer of laptops/PCs.  I'd still blow out the dust/dirt, but I'm betting it's just lack of air flow due to the ottoman blocking it.  Get a laptop cooler and use it.  They are a cheap way to protect your laptop from overheating, even if it's on a hard table but doing something like a graphics intensive game.

OK, a little update, I found a Hard Drive testing utility for my Hard Drive and ran it, Hard Drive comes back as fine, I'm keeping it elevated up off the Ottoman now via balancing it on my knees, so temps are staying in the optimal range. But it is still shutting off randomly. I need to run that Memtest thing Kalgorn posted, but I'm starting to think something may be wrong with my power supply? Could that be causing the shut downs? Is there any easy way to check that or am I just fucked and need to take it a repair shop or my IT guy at work?

What makes you think something's wrong with the power supply? Is it not charging properly?

The only way to test it is to take a multimeter to it and check the voltage to see if it's outputting what it's supposed to.

However, the only way I see that causing an issue is that it's not charging properly and your battery is running low without you knowing, but that's unlikely.

Hmmm ok, I was just brainstorming thing....I mean the temps are all fine, the HD scan tool thing didn't find any issues....I'm kinda at a wall here.

RAM would be my next guess. It's a very common reason for random restarts.

How old is it?  This is sounding a lot like how old desktops would short out and shutdown/reboot because someone didn't put enough risers on the MB to keep it from hitting the back plate.

My guess would be the ram as well.

For a thorough testing, download Memtest86 and create a bootable CD.

Leave it in your dvd drive, restart, select the F key that allows you to select where you boot from and select DVD drive.

Let it run at least three cycles before giving it the ok.
