Radiator Bullshit
« on: September 24, 2012, 10:33:40 AM »
So I replaced my radiator in March, ended up blowing my engine and having to get it rebuilt (WOOOO CHRYSLER QUALITY) at 94k miles. Fast Forward to September, the shitty plastic upper tank on my radiator decides it would be a good idea to split open and spew coolant everywhere. So I replace that broke ass piece of shit with a completely new radiator, it works fine for a could weeks, now its leaking out of the drain valve at the bottom apparently. I dried it off and RTV'ed the shit out of it, that seemed to work, but when I got to work this morning it was leaking again. I really don't want to replace my radiator....again (Lifetime Warranty, I'll get another for free) anybody have any ideas WTF may be causing this or any fix ideas?

When you replaced the radiator, did you do a full cooling system flush? It's possible that there were contaminants in the system from before that caused some sort of corrosion. Although if you just replaced it a few weeks ago (assuming I'm reading this correctly), that's a real long shot.

I'm betting you just got a bum ass radiator the first time.

Yeah, after the other one blew (it did split along the plastic seam on the tank, I think it was just faulty) we did a full coolant flush before installing the new one. A couple of people have said to put teflon tape on the threads of the valve...so hopefully that will cure it. I'm saving up for an all aluminum radiator...I'm tired of this plastic shit.

Teflon tape might be the winner.

Only thing I can think that would allow excessive pressure to build up and split the top/start leaks is a faulty cap or a faulty radiator.

UPDATE:

Teflon Tape was a fail, RTV FAIL....we just yanked the stock threaded part out and stuffed a bolt and washer up in there to take care of it. Probably going to replace the radiator AGAIN this weekend or next...as soon as I can.
