Strange choice to go with extremely fast RAM with a low/mid-range processor. Should be solid though..lots of good brands.

Leaves him room to upgrade later if he wants though. Bulldozer would plug right in.

It was only 40 bucks, down from 65.

Everything was bought on sale.

The ram was on clearance. :-)

Bulldozer

I was going to wait for piledriver.

Ahh fair enough. I didn't realize the X4 chips were that cheap these days. Pretty solid rig for the price then. My X2 555 BE served me well until I got bored last year.

Awesome to hear, what did you replace it with Hampy?

Doh, looks like the 6950 is not going to happen. The 6 pin connectors on my Seasonic will cry for mercy under load. Glad I waited to buy it.

It will have to be the Sapphire 6870 :-\

Ordering the last pieces today. Should be built and *crosses fingers* operational by friday next week. :D

Why is the 6950 out of the question? That 520W is enough wattage and it should have enough amperage to do it. I can't find any specs for the 6950 that say how much amperage it pulls, but a 520W Seasonic has 40A on a single rail which is pretty significant. A GTX 560 Ti requires 30A and I believe the 6950 is in the same ballpark of power.

Cutting it a bit close though, isn't it?

Newegg's PSU calculator recommends 561 watts minimum with my setup, which probably a bit of a padded number. Sure, my PSU could probably handle it, but for how long?

The Newegg calculator says I should have a 557W minimum. I believe I have a 500W or 550W right now. I'm not 100% sure because I had to send my old one in under warranty and they bumped me up. However, my old PSU was a 430W and it ran this same machine no problem. I put it on one of those Kill-A-Watt devices with Prime95 ramped up and it was barely pulling 300W. While playing a graphically-intensive game, it didn't pull much more.

In my opinion, those PSU calculators heavily inflate the requirements because they assume that a lot of people are going to buy a cheap PSU. A 500W cheap PSU != 500W quality PSU. Sure, the wattage is the same, but cheap PSUs have multiple 12V rails, lower amperage on the 12V, and just simply lower quality.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I don't know for sure that's how they work.

This... computer... is... AWESOME!

The AMD 965 with the Radeon 6870 work like a charm at stock clock. Dirt 3 benchmarked 55fps with cranked up AA.

I have to admit the ram was the only thing that I kind of regret because only serious overclockers can hit those speeds. Eh, whatevs. It was on sale :-)

The window on the case is kind of nifty, lets me peek at what I spent my small fortune on.

I'm very, very happy with this build.

Excuse the messy desk. :-)

Why wouldn't it? The 965 is already 3.4 gigahertz. I know I took to it 3.8 on an H50 and we all know how bad those are.

I had my 555 at 3.85 and taking it any further was pretty unstable. The 965 is the same chip, except it runs hotter with the 4 active cores.
There won't be a real world difference in 3.8-4.0GHz anyway.

Nick, give fences a try. Helps keep cluttered desktops organized and allows all links to be hidden with a double click. Neat program.
