Dubstep
« on: May 22, 2012, 06:55:25 PM »
I'm tired of people telling me how revolutionary Dubstep is.

I'm tired of people telling me that I don't know what I'm missing.

I'm tired of people telling me that Dubstep is the evolution of music, the genre of the modern age.

To me, it sounds like two Terminators fucking.

I'm don't know what a "Skrillex" is, but apparently it's just ridiculously popular, and people won't shut the fuck up about it. Maybe I'm out of touch with the times, maybe I am getting old, but this shit doesn't sound like music to me. Even if I did concede that it is music, it doesn't sound very revolutionary to me - it just sounds like a different version of techno. You know, techno - the OTHER computer created "music" that soared to popularity in the early 2000's.

I'm not gonna be so bold as to knock someone for being creative and composing music all their own, no matter how retarded I think it sounds, but I still can't get past the fact that people are praising this shit like it really is some sort of god damned musical revolution.

If that's true... I'll just go ahead and lock myself in an underground bunker now.

electronic music can sound incredibly good

I've never paid attention to Dubstep. Most of the popular shit is just WUBWUBWUBWUB nonsense and it's awful and I just don't understand

I'm not necessarily knocking electronic music. I used to play the shit out of Need For Speed 4: High Stakes on PS1 and the best music in the game was the techno. It just fit the mood so well and really pumped up the excitement of racing around extremely pixelated tracks.

Ughh. I cant stand that shit. I cant stand it, and I cant stand the annoying assholes who listen to it.

I dont get the people who listen to it. They all dress in skinny jeans... and fashion associated with music is centered around the artist's look, right? Does that mean shitstep musicians wear skinny jeans all the time? Jeez, you'd think that someone whose job is to sit in front of a computer all day, would dress a bit more comfortably. ;)

I agree with all of the above. Sponty, why did you just post the same song three times?

Honestly though, I was trying to give it a shot, so one day at work I was playing a live DubMau5 concert in the background. About a half hour when by, and I thought "When are they going to get to the second song?"

I'm a little fond of dubstep, but I've never seen such a genre of music evoke such rage in people.

Also, yes...Skrillex sucks.

It's an opinion just like anything else. People are fanatical about rap music. Personally, I can't stand any rap from the past 10 years or so. I liked very select rap when I was in middle school/high school but not much.

The same goes for dubstep. Some people just love it. Just because you don't like a particular type of music doesn't mean someone can't be fanatical about it.

I can't stand country music but it's the top genre down here in the south.

Normally I would make fun of Nick for making a rant thread about such a stupid topic (WE DON'T LIKE THE SAME THING AND THAT IS BAD), but one thing I cannot abide is FANATICS. Case in point:

Do you know how long it took me to see the Pirates of the Caribbean? Probably well until after the THIRD movie had been released. Here's why: Every friend I had would NOT shut up about it. It was the topic of conversation for several weeks, from the week before the opening until well into the second or third week the movie had been released. How amazing it was. How amazing Orlando Bloom was (the guy who fell out of a fucking helo in Blackhawk Down, okay, sure, he's awesome), how strong Keira Knightley's character was, and most of all, how [random adjective] Johnny Depp was as Sparrow.

I get it. It's strange to see Depp without Burton suckling at his teat, but seriously? The franchise was not the end-all be-all. It was good, and I enjoy it now, but I certainly wasn't about to do backflips in place simply to see the midnight release.

I told my best friend how good the Hunger Games was, in my opinion, and she's in the exact same boat I was in before. The friends she has are swinging from the movie's nuts SO HARD that she probably won't see it until it comes out on DVD (regular DVD, not even Blu-Ray), simply because the rabid attitudes of the people around her are corrupting her opinion before she even has a chance to form it.

We've ALL had this experience, too. If you can't think of something right away, it just means you haven't had it yet, but I promise you will, and you will want to punch so many people in the ear for it.

Also, my signature is suddenly relevant and funny.

I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything, but I really can't agree with that statement coming from someone on this forum, a forum that was created to make fun of people who do things to their cars that we don't like.

If we were to apply that "to each their own" mantra to everything, Anti-Rice wouldn't exist, right?

BUT, I do need to clarify that I don't care if people like music that I consider shitty - I'm sure not everyone thinks the Foo Fighters or Alter Bridge are as great as I do.

I just get tired of fanaticism - thanks, dot, for bringing that word up, that's the word I was looking for to describe it.

That said, try explaining to someone under 18 why Predator is one of the greatest film ever made. Throw in Conan to keep it Arnie related and watch the child ad hominem your argument by telling you Arnie is a bad actor. This kid simply will not get it.

Dubstep will either fall into obscurity like emo and disco or be here to stay. All I ask is that more gifted composers try to arrange the crazy oscillations and cool fucking sounds people came up with into something more meaningful. I mean, look what some talented guys did with disco by meshing it with film score sounds.

The products of innovation are everywhere. Question is, can you handle change?
