Need some help tracking down a certain projector lens..
« on: May 04, 2012, 03:26:54 PM »
I bought some HID's for the 95 Ram that I have, and they work well and work great, but I have them in the stock housings right now. I can see just fine, but I know I could benefit so much more from them being in a projector housing and other drivers on the road probably hate me right now.

I found a set of one piece (headlight and blinker all in one)

These were the best looking ones I could find that weren't completely filled with LED's, yes they have some LED's and a halo ring but I'm not hooking that shit up, and it's hard to find them without those things these days.

I contacted the company by phone and e-mail before I bought them, they said they will work with the factory 9004/7 bulbs and that these do not come with the H1 style bulbs pre-installed like most setups do, but they would have a blinker bulb installed. Sounded odd, but I went with it and ordered them. Got them today, H1 bulbs installed and no way to put my factory style in there, and no blinker bulb. They are getting sent back, and I'm getting refunded.

So now.. does anyone know where I can track down some projector lenses that will allow me to use 9004/7 bulbs? I'm not changing my HID kit, it's brand new. And I'm not re-wiring the truck for different bulbs, I'm sure it's not hard I just don't really care to do it at this point.

Are there any retrofits that can be done on your stock lenses? I know it can be expensive sometimes, but a good projector goes a long way.

I actually found a guy that will do it, but just have to figure out if it will be in my price range. And I just want to explore all of my options here.

Fuck. The guy e-mailed me back, and according to him there are no projectors that accept my style of bulb. So, either I change the kit to H1 bulbs or just leave the ones I have now alone. I know I won't be able to send my kit back, maybe I could sell it.. but then it would have been pointless for me to send those lenses back like I already did, because I could have used them if I change the bulbs.

Mother fucking shit god dammit. That guy wants close to $600 to do the retro fit.. probably worth it, but more than I'm willing to spend. Now I need to re-think my whole plan.

$600 for him to DO a retrofit sounds like a great deal. Almost too great. Buddy of mine spent something like $700 for TSX projectors alone, and did the work himself...

I don't doubt it's a good deal, just more than I want to spend at the moment.

Take a look into the Mini H1 projector. It will actually fit in an H4 or H7 housing with little to no modification. On the plus side, they are small and great projectors.

Halogen projectors with HID kit bulbs are trash, and you're just going to blind other drivers.

Is that not the definition of function over form though?

Like most rice... It depends on your mentality.

"Check out my badass projectors bro they're fly as hell."

Vs.

"Man, I'm glad I got these projectors, now I can see when I drive!"

Plus, taste.  Some people don't see them as ugly, so to them it would be form=function or something.

Basically what Nava said, I agree that they are beneficial, especially if you live in a rural area with dark as hell roads....but they are also ugly as fuck

<3 projectors.

A well-designed HID projector will provide evenly distributed light over a wide area without blinding on-coming traffic. I'm not aware of any lights that are pre-made which are designed to be used with HID's.

Go with the Mini H1's and get a set of basic cleared headlights to put them in. The fluted lenses won't work.

I think for now my plan is to look into some sport lenses as they aren't fluted. Maybe eventually I will look into swapping them to H1 and getting projectors, but the cash flow isn't as good as it was right now. :(

I'm confused as fuck.  Is it a HID kit, or is it a kit to look like a HID kit that uses standard bulbs?

The lens at the top? It's a new headlight assembly that has a proper projector lens in it, so you can use HID's properly without killing everyone.

I'm confused as fuck.  Is it a HID kit, or is it a kit to look like a HID kit that uses standard bulbs?

The kit that I have is true HID. They fit into the factory bulb housing for the factory headlights.

At the time, I was un-aware that they did not make projector lenses for my style of bulb. Only for the H1 style. So, after asking around and researching I found out I was up shit creek if I keep my current HID's and want to put them in a projector housing, because it won't happen.

So, what I've done for now is picked up some aftermarket headlights that are clear, instead of fluted.

VS the factory fluted ones:

I thought about converting it to the sport lights off of the newer Rams, but they are a dual bulb per headlight and would also require small modification to fit. I didn't have any use for the dual bulb setup, and a set of those cost quite a bit more than these that I got. Eventually, I will switch the HID kit to H1 bulbs and get projectors, but just these lenses made quite a bit of difference in the light output and focus.
