Porblems with my engine.
« on: January 28, 2012, 01:04:59 AM »
before this winter I started noticing some abnormal sounds in my engine (390 FE / 66 Ford F100).  So, I pulled the engine, took her apart.  Found a bad piston rod bearing.

Has me thinking though.  Now that engines out and apart, upgrades?

Thinking bigger cam, different crank (thinking 428 or 427)....possibly aluminum heads.

I don't have a ton of money to blow on it, but its something I've wanted to do for a while now.

427 has the same stroke as the 390, 428 crank will give you a 410... which was a factory mercury engine.
If you just want the steel crank, you can find a 391 FT engine and have the crank snout turned down to FE size.
I have gone the stroker route, not bad, but an edelbrock top end would give you better results.

Aftermarket cranks have different strokes though.

I've already got a performer alum intake + holley 650 cfm 4barrel.  I wanted the Alum heads back in 03 when I built it...just didn't have the cash.

The 3.98" stroke is a 410/428 crank.
The other one is a stroker crank... Expensive pistons.
At the most you want the 428 crank.
But you want the heads first.

So to make it a true 428, I'd have to widen the bore.

I've already bored this block .30 over.  With the crank thats what... 416?

Aluminum heads, new cam, crank...hmmm...
