Car Stereos?
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:59:49 AM »
I know jack about stereos

Someone recommend me a new head unit for my Camaro? I don't need anything fancy, just an iPod jack and a CD player is all I really need.

Budget? Eehhh... I'm not really into stereo stuff that much as long as I can hear it well... I can't tell the difference between a fancy head unit and a crappy one frankly. I just want something that works.

There's a company that makes modern head units designed to look like the originals, if that tickles your fancy at all. iPod hook up, remote, etc..

I can't remember the name of the company, though...

I'm really partial to Alpine, mainly because I bought my head unit brand new in 2003 and it's been in 2 Z71s and is now in my Jeep and still works like it did the first day I installed it....it's a CDA-9833, if/when it dies I'll upgrade to a 9855 most likely, I like the old school Alpine stuff.

I have an Alpine, and it's nice, but if there's one major complaint I have, it's that the clock doesn't stay on when you turn the head unit off. It doesn't make sense why they would do that.

I've looked on forums and help boards and such and others with my particular model made the same complaint, and there's apparently no option to change it.

On the other hand, my Sony xplod was really nice, stream lined and simple.. but it lacked the iPod connection. It just had an AUX input.. which worked, but it's much nicer to control the iPod through the head unit itself.

Really? after all the 'modern' stuff I've put in the car and you'd think I'd want to go with a stock looking radio?

Well, it's similar to stock but with a modern digital display, might look kinda cool  The main idea is that you don't have to cut up your dash, you can get a modern head unit that will bolt right in place of the old one with no modification to the dash needed.

This is just one, no idea if it would belong in your car or not.

Why would you turn your head unit off? I don't think I've ever turned mine off, I just turn it all the way down if I need quietness

Dash has been cut, I don't care about stock anymore.

I've always been partial to Pioneer's products.  Great quality, and excellent reliability.

Maybe now, but back in 01/02, myself and several friends had Pioneers in our cars, and we all had the same issue - the fucking CD's wouldn't eject. You had to bang on the thing to get your CD back.

If you find yourself having electrical issues (for example, let's say your alternator suddenly craps out while you're driving) then you want to cut as many electrical things as possible, such as the radio.

Cheap. I have this cheap Sony stereo in both mine and my wife's cars and they work great. Easy to wire up, simple to use, and has a 3.5mm aux input for an MP3 player.

I turn it off whenever I'm not using it, or when I park. Maybe it's paranoia but I don't like to have any accessories running or trying to run when I start my vehicle in the morning.

Fair enough, I just always leave mine on, probably because I'm lazy as fuck.

Go with Alpine... Or Eclipse.

I've always had Alpine, never had an issue, and I like the "high endness" of it...

Although that has changed in the last few years because the sell some lower end stuff now too...

I *loved* my Clarion CX-400 I had in my Volkswagen. It looked very classy, not out of place like most Sony, JVC, or Alpine models. Sound quality was excellent and the price was good too. Here's what is basically the single-DIN version of it:

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_23447_Clarion-CZ500.html

Reviews should speak for themselves on that model.  Bluetooth and included USB cable (would be awesome routed through the console) are a nice touch.  Sonic is an outstanding retailer BTW..spent about $500 with them in 2010 on the VW. Prices tend to be better than Crutchfield or Best Buy as well.

Another tick for the Alpine.  They have a cable that you can hook your Ipod into any of their models.

And it hooks to the dock connector, not the headphone jack so it allows you to control the ipod from the deck itself and the sound quality is better through the dock adapter than it is through headphone jack.
