Tires: What is considered too small of width per rim width?
« on: October 09, 2011, 08:07:00 PM »
I'm on a few different forums...and I've noticed quite a different mindset on what tire sizes to run on certain width rims...

I'll use mine as an example:

17x8 wheel, with a 235/45 R17 tire. I know that it's just slightly too small for the wheel, because the tire's rim guard doesn't sit completely flush. But by no means, stretched. Now, two forums I frequent on, agree with me on this. The tire is a bit too small, but nothing to truely be concerned about for DD use.

Now, some other places I noticed the opposite. I was told the tire is too wide...and should run a 205/45 or 215/45 on my 17x8 wheel.

What are your thoughts on proper aftermarket wheel and tire fitment, and what is too small, or too big for a particular wheel size and width?

I like my tires to sit flush with the wheel, I'd run a 245/45 if I were you but the 235 is not to skinny or going to hurt anything. 205 is not wide enough for an 8" wheel, I dont care if it will fit, it's not enough.

A 245/45 tire is too tall for my car, going by the tire size calculator I use. The 235/45 is still fairly close to the OEM diameter, and still sits flush with the rim.

Tire manufactures give an acceptable wheel width for each tire they make...

For example a 245/45/17 BFG g-Force™ Super Sport A/S is safe on a 7-9.5" wheel. BFG actually uses an 8" wide wheel to give the section width measurement (9.5").

Who cares? It's the tire you want, on the rim you want. Mission accomplished.

Recommended rim widths are a ballpark suggestion, like quantum said. Your tires won't explode unless you get silly and stretch a 145 onto an 8 inch rim and then try to drift or something.

TLDR: Just fucking eyeball it.

If it doesn't look like this, it's fine.
