Big 3 Battle: The 90's
« on: August 04, 2011, 05:04:29 PM »
Ok, so I guess there really isn't a point in making a new thread once a week... I plan on going as far back as the 50's, so a total of 6 threads when all is said and done, hope that's not gonna bother anyone. Let me know if it is and maybe we can make one voting thread, then another comment thread.. or something like that.

Which of the big 3 was king in the 90's, in your opinion?

The heyday of SUV's.

I think Chrysler was doing better with their trucks and SUV's than anyone else, especially with Jeep. While the Explorer and Blazer focused on comfort over capability, even the plush Jeep Grand Cherokee was extremely capable off-road. Explorer and Blazer always seemed like "me-too!" entries into the segment.

GM wins for their mid-sized cars, in my opinion. The 3.1, 3.4, and 3.8 litre engines being stuffed into pretty much everything weren't without their faults, but got excellent fuel mileage, and in the case of the 3.8, excellent power as well. All were very tough motors that could stand some heavy abuse before finally giving up the ghost. Plus, the design for several of their cars, namely the 95 Monte Carlo, was a lot more sleek and modern than its competitors.

I can't speak for Ford. Their high sales obviously says something, but I think overall GM had the better cars in the 90's.

>SUVS

none of the above

The Blazer is stupid, the 90's Explorer is the one of worst things humanity has ever produced, and the only one I can really respect is the Cherokee.

As for cars, Chrysler had the Touring Car Stratus, the Viper, Neon, the Prowler which at the very least was a cool idea

Fjord had the SHO Taurus, those neat looking Cobra Mustangs, the UK got the Escort and I believe Focus rally cars, the PUMA, and just because I really like how it looks, the GT90

All I can think of for GM is the Camaro, Trans Am, Corvette, I'm sure theres more neat stuff they made that I'm missing.

I think I like 90's Chrysler the most overall though.

Gonna be the only one to go with ford so far since I owned a 92' ford ranger lifted with 33"s on it and a cap that went with the body. Was such a nice truck, wish I had it longer.

Keep in mind this is coming from me and I am really not a fan of ford.

GTP (both the DOHC and supercharged versions), and like someone else said, F-bodies and corvette started getting real attention.

GMC Typhoon/Syclone.  Also, GM really hammered the full size SUV market with the Yukon, Tahoe, Suburban.
