Auto-Genealogy: The Jeep Cherokee
« on: May 01, 2011, 08:36:09 PM »
For these "Auto-Genealogy" threads, you can post info, or just simply photos of every iteration of any vehicle of your choosing. I'm picking the Cherokee to start with because I'm freshly infatuated with them

(all of these photos of the year-models are based off what I could find on the internet, and are subject to being flat-out wrong so please feel free to correct any mistakes)

1974-1978 SJ (based off of the Jeep Wagoneer)

1979-1983 SJ

1984-1996 XJ (possibly the longest run without a design alteration other than the Checker Marathon?)

1997-2001 XJ

The Cherokee as we knew and loved it was discontinued in 2001 and replaced with the Liberty, which is actually known as the Cherokee in Europe.
2002-2007 KJ

2008-Present KK

I didn't claim it. I just figure it speaks for itself how Jeep went from making some of the most popular SUV's and off-road vehicles ever made, to making over sized Tonka Toys and Barbie Dream Rides.

You know the XJ was considered an abomination when it was introduced. It was a 4wd station wagon with a car engine. Not to mention it's big brother sat on a full size truck chassis, not a french unibody design. It was the fastest production SUV at the time as well (starting in 87 with the 4.0). It was more expensive than competitors vehicles as most new Jeeps are. The XJ was what all CJ guys hated. It wasn't until the market was flooded with XJs, driving down their used value, that the Jeep community latched onto the XJ. Afterall, Jeepers are cheap SOBs.

This is the story countless Jeep old timers have told me. I can't speak from experience since the XJ has been around longer than myself.

I like the KJ and suspect it will be embraced by the Jeep community, especially the CRD variety. Probably not as well as the XJ since it has not maintained a steady design for 10 years.

Just a little more welding than needed when putting long arms on a TJ.... and you get this:

Yeah, but that should have come with an SFA to begin with and you would need less welding then.  Ooooorrrr.....ooooorrrrr..they could have stuck with the Cherokee and given it a refresh.  No one minded the design, it obviously sold.  The 4.0 was a liked engine, and I'm sure they had ways to make it stronger and more fuel efficient.  Hell, GM was doing that all the time with the 3800 engine.

Other than the half assed fender flares (just toss that shit!) that is a mighty sexy beast.

Well, GM built the GMT400 trucks from 1988 to 2000.  So they are at least matched.  The overall design did not change other than grilles, interiors, and engines with the release of the Vortec engine in 96.  Much the same as the Cherokee.  Sheet metal from all years interchange.  Now the 73-87 trucks...
