iPod reverse syncing software
« on: April 18, 2011, 01:12:30 PM »
I've given up on getting my MP3s off my mac formatted external drive, so my new plan is to reformat that harddrive to be more Windows friendly and just reverse sync my iPod to get the music files back but holy shit there's a million programs that will do it. So does anyone have any experience with any programs they would recommend for this?

Hmm, not sure about that, but can't you just put your iPod into storage mode and transfer the MP3's directly that way? Or is the Mac drive not actually hooked up to a Mac right now?

Well my Mac is dead, and as far as I know I can't just drag the files off the iPod unless something has changed in the last couple generations.

Going from when i had one, you should be able to go into "my computer" open up the ipod files and find the folder containing the music and copy/paste from there.

Well, I am going by the old one I had. it was a 1st or 2nd gen so they may have made it so you couldn't do that.

You can copy/paste them... You have to enable the "view hidden folders" option in Windows... How you do that varies with what version of Windows you're running; Check HERE for more info on that.

Copied all the files off of a newer iPod classic that way a couple months ago.

In years past I used a program called "iDump". Worked no problem.

Yeah for some reason I remember seeing them but iTunes recognized them or something..My memory is fuzzy but I remember that not being an issue.

Another option would be to download/burn a Linux distribution's .iso file to a disc, pop that into your computer and run it as a live cd (doesn't install anything).  I know for sure that Linux can access the windows drives, and I'm guessing it should be able to access the mac one as well.  The only hurdle might be the drive being external and probably USB.  Couldn't hurt to try (unless you fuck it up and somehow install Linux on your computer when you don't want to).

MEaty,

I don't know f you've already formatted the external drive and I don't know if you've looked into software that can read HFS formats, but if you haven't, look for software similar to HFS Explorer.

Drain:  Linux can indeed access HFS (including most all of the other Os X formats) but you will have to run the file explorer (be it Nautilus, Dolphin, etc) as root.  You won't be able to access user data stored on an Os X install  as a regular Linux user.

If it's a Mac you're transferring to, there's a program called Senuti. It appears to be a trail-version only though....

http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/

(Get it? Senuti < > iTunes? It does the opposite of iTunes, so it's named the opposite?)
