1966 Oldsmobile Toronado
« on: March 19, 2011, 02:50:03 PM »

Introduced for the 1966 model year, the Toronado is widely known as the pioneer for front wheel drive American cars. Although there was the Cord in the late 30's, the great depression help put an end to production for that car as sales were lackluster. Other great innovations to come from this beaut included; the turbo-hydromatic 400 3 speed, the Rochester Q-jet 4bb, spherical shaped exhaust-manifold flange gaskets (which supposedly prevented leaks), and "Draft Free" ventilation system (which reduced wind noise by getting rid of the front vented windows). Power came from a 425ci V8 rated at 375 hp and 475 lb-ft. 0-60 in 7.5 seconds and the quarter in 16.5 seconds at 93mph made it pretty quick for a car of its weight and class, considering it was classified as a "personal luxury car" (shared that class with GM cousins Buick Riviera and the later introduced and also FWD Cadillac Eldorado, as well as the competing Ford Thunderbird). The Oldsmobile Toronado won Motor Trend's "Car of the Year" in 1966 and went on to sell over 40,000 in that year alone.
Formerly DoD.

I love how these things have a 20,000 liter V8 or something in them and they're FRONT WHEEL DRIVE

Yep, but not a transverse mounted engine fwd, the engine sits in there the right way.

Jim

I was kind of hoping it would go like it is.  Not every inovative car was fast.  Some of them were just average Joe cars with remarkable options.

I tend to not care for the real high dollar cars.

Hopefully I can keep up on my "Movie Car of the Week" (which may also include some actually fast cars, but that's not the focus). Glad to see people are enjoying this forum!

I used to service one of these regularly at the shop where I started my apprenticeship.

I remember having to push it in and out of the shop for two weeks while I waited on drive axles for it

Also, the amount of power assist they gave this thing to make up for the metric ton of 400 under the hood makes steering it feel like it doesn't have a column

I was just about to say it looks like the one he built. His also has twin turbos and like 1000hp doesn't it? I remember it being a BEAST.

My father in law has 3 of these, and he's in the process of putting them together into 1 good one.  There is still a lot of body work to do.  I need to go relight the fire under his ass to get it done.

Why make 1 good one when you can make 3 good ones.

What's better than a 66 Toronado? How about a twin-engined 66 Toronado.
