2.5 inch IDE drive in 3.5 inch IDE enclosure
« on: March 09, 2011, 05:06:55 AM »
I'm helping a girl from one of my classes rescue some data off of her crashed laptop, and it has a 2.5 inch IDE drive. I don't have an enclosure for one, but I do have a 3.5 inch IDE enclosure. Now I know that with SATA it doesn't matter, if an enclosure can handle the power of a 3.5 inch drive, a 2.5 inch laptop drive is not a problem. However, is it the same for IDE? Are 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives the same in terms of plugs, or do 2.5 inch drives have different plugs?

I'm trying to figure this out before going to her place. She thinks I'm some sort of laptop guru, and since she has an epic rack and is making me dinner as a thank you, I'd like to keep up that appearance.  ;D

2.5" IDE harddrives have 2 more pins, I think. I doubt it will work. If you're not in a time crunch, you can get a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter online.

ive done it, it works but the plug is physically smaller so you need an adaptor

I have to do this right now too.  I just bought this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812156102

Will come in handy for other things too since it's not just for 2.5" IDE.

I'm sure you could find one locally but it wouldn't be as cheap.

Ah ok, though they are pin-compatible, they apparently aren't mechanically compatible. Go figure.

I'll try to see if I can find one locally. I need it by Friday, so buying online probably isn't fast enough.
