Grilling without Charcoal
« on: February 25, 2011, 02:43:12 PM »
Anyone do this?  Maybe wood or something.  I know I've seen those newspaper grills too.

Anyway, last weekend we were going to grill some chicken.  I had a little bit of charcoal left and it was kinda old, and the bag was kinda wet.   I live on 7 acres, so I just gathered up some wood.  Mostly oak branches, and put them in my grill.  It was great.  I had been wanting to cook over wood for awhile, just never did.  Anyone have suggestions or experiences with wood? Isn't it true that certain woods can add different flavors?   Although, I mostly have oak around here.  Maybe a pecan. And I think black walnut. Not sure what else.

We're going to have chicken tonight, and I plan on grilling it to try using wood again.

I've cooked over wood. Hickory will give a distint smokier flavor, cherry adds a slighty fruity to taste. (To me)
It really isn't that hard to do and to me..it burns better and longer than charcoal.

I agree.  Being the country I've always had bonfires.  And just from that, it's easier to control. And like you said, burns better and longer.  It also took less time for it to be "ready" compared to charcoal.  I don't think I will be buying charcoal ever again.

Charcoal actually burns hotter than wood, and charcoal is better to use because all of the undesirable properties that burning wood has (sap, creosote, etc) have already been burned off.

Aren't some types of trees bad to use for cooking/smoking?

I'm sure that's true.  I probably wouldn't try pine   But, the oak worked fine.  I've heard people talk about Pecan being a good wood for cooking with too.

At our first Northeast AR Meet, Alex was in charge of charcoal and brought like 10 briquettes so we had to wing it. We just piled on a bunch of sticks and cooked burgers and hotdogs on it.

No. They were still in the original bag, but that's all that was left. He just brought whatever was left at home.
