Got an External Hard Drive for free....
« on: February 16, 2011, 02:23:42 PM »
It's a Wester Digital My Book Essential Edition.   500GB

This guy just gives it to me.

Anyway, How can I found out what kind of drive is in it?  Descriptions online aren't showing anything.  I would hate to mess it up tearing it apart.  If it's a SATA I wouldn't mind swapping it into my PS3 lol.

Meh, looks like it's a desktop drive.

If it has its own power cable, it's going to be a 3.5" drive. If it's powered just by USB, it's a 2.5" notebook drive.

It could be a 3.5" or 2.5" drive in it but the logic board might have the USB controller built into it.

Wat?

I'm pretty sure there aren't any companies that make a 3.5" external that powers strictly by USB.

Hmm.. Should I use it as an external. Or take the drive out, although I already have 550GB with 2 drives on this computer.  Or, maybe use it for a build.  Or..sell it. lol

I would use it for an external. You can use it to make backups of files before a reformat. It would help you with customer PCs if they're having issues that require a complete wipe.

I have a slim 320GB Toshiba(which I also got free) and a Maxtor 120GB for that.  But........I can dump the 320 to this 500GB and put the 320 in my PS3!! It's USB Powered! Win
