Cheapass electronics, and the stupid people that use them
« on: February 09, 2011, 03:45:53 PM »
Woman came into my store...

"I know it's not your problem, but I got this camera from a friend and I have no idea how to use it"
*pulls out the camera*
"It's a Jazz, and it was purchased at Canadian Tire.  They're a pain to use"
"It is!!! How'd you know?"
"Because we've had those pieces of garbage come into the store before"
"What do you mean?"
"It was probably about $70"
"Yeah, it was a lot!"
"...The cheapest video camera we have in the store is $279"
*jaw hits the floor*
"Can you show me how to use it?  Whenever I try to record, it says it's full"
*I pick up camera, hit record*
"See, it's full!"
"The timer counting, and the flashing REC doesn't mean it's full..........."
"Oh, I must have been doing something wrong then..... What's this cable for?"
"To hook up the camera to your television"
"Really???"
"Yes, it just plugs in the yellow, white and red spots of your TV (I demonstrate on LCD)
"But I don't have one of those fancy TVs"
"You have it, but it's either in the front or back"
"Really?"
"Yes"
"Really?"
"Yes"
"....Do you know about digital (still) cameras"
"Yes"
"About aperture-thingy and program, and....(trails off into stupidity)?"
"I'm self-taught, but yes"
"I'm taking this course, and I don't understand it.  I need to take 10 photos of something using...(fill in what you want here, I stopped listening)... Can you help me? I'll pay you $50"
"Not set up for it, sorry" (I CAN do it, but if she's taking a course, she needs to learn to do it herself)
"Oh, but I thought you knew this stuff"
"I know it, I don't have what you need."
(insert a whole bunch of meaningless conversation, about camera, her Hyundai that she just took for an oil change at the dealer, and now it's jerking [wtf])

As she's leaving, she's looking at the cameras for sale...

"I like that one!"
"That's the Panasonic LX-series.  It does everything the big professional cameras can, with aperture, shutter, and ISO settings."
"That's really neat, it would be nice to have! How much is it?"
"On sale right now for $499"
"ARE YOU SERIOUS? Holy crap!  How much are those big cameras people carry around?"
"Anywhere from $600 to $4000+"
"Oh my god!"

What's with stupid fuckin people using cheap electronics.  It's not a good deal.  It's not a good product.  It doesn't work well because it's not supposed to work well. The camera gives you a headache, and now you're giving me a headache.  Me helping you is not benefiting me in anyway.  You didn't by the camera from me, and this free advice has probably gone right over your head.  I'm patient with my customers, and am friendly as can be, but I really have better things to do than waste my time with you.   It would have did both of us a favour if you didn't even come into the store.  Now take cheap camera, get in your cheap car, and enjoy your penny pinching.

Not at all. She bought a Hyundai SUV brand new.  I don't think she's overly hurtin' for money.

Same happens with jewelry and computers.

Person walks in wanting gold and diamonds.  Their budget?  $150.00

Person wants me to build a computer for them, but saw a dell/hp at walmart for $299.  They want to know if I can build one that cheap and they want MS Office and other software. They also want tech support and they want me to set it up at their house.
