ati HD4890 vs ati HD5830
« on: December 13, 2010, 06:31:47 PM »
OK all. Quick question, since opinions are generally welcome. Which is the better card? I have a 4870 which will be going in for an RMA through XFX. Looks like the 4870 are no longer made. That being said, the 4890s have not been getting sold for quite some time. As in you can not even find them, and when you do they command a ridiculous amount.

So. I was basically told that the likelihood of getting a 4xxx card back is not that great. That the card most likely to be received is a 5830.  By the looks of them they all have the reference design cooler, which is a plus (XFX).   Now, Here is the question. Is the 5830 a decent upgrade to the 4870 in number crunching and games?

And yes, I realize ati cards are not the best number crunchers compared to Nvidia.. I plan to actually run one nvidia card and one ATI card in the end.. ATI for games, Nvidia for numbers.

Seems to be an upgrade, but not much.

Not bad I suppose.  I hear it overclocks well, and is most definitely a decent upgrade compared to the 4870.   Which should be a good thing.  Anything is better than the 8600 GTS which is flake as crap I am forced to use at the moment (I thought it was dead, but after a year it works. kinda. had to drastically underclock it, and turn the fan to 100% to keep it from showing artifacts and just outright stop working..

The best thing period is that it is free. Well, almost anyhow.. It will cost me $15 for a card easily worth 10 times that. $15 to upgrade.. seems a nice deal at this point considering the increase of performances. even if it is a little. the DX 11 support is a bonus.

Not bad at all. It's nice to see that they're willing to upgrade you instead of finding a replacement sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

Yea. once things actually get rolling all is good.  Just wish they had support people there on the weekend. was in the middle of an RMA on friday night, and did not get the actual RMA number until Monday..

However they did answer all my questions, and even looked in their warehouse inventory to see if they had a replacement cooler they could just send me without having to RMA the card. So at least they tried to inconvience me the least they could.  Just wish they would use better fan parts.  When a fan literally comes apart from itself, that just is not a good sign that the fn was any good.  Also seemed like the card I have also had a history of the fan being a POS (bearing grind)
