Anyone suggest a good notebook <$500
« on: November 22, 2010, 10:34:10 AM »
Hey I'm looking to get the wife a good notebook.  I don't want to get some of these cheap BF deals, as they seem like bottom of the barrel laptops.  I just want a steady/reliable laptop that can do all the basics (nothing to demanding) that is built well.

I was looking at an ASUS netbook (11 hours of battery is definitely nice) but I'm thinking that the screen might just be a bit small.

Any suggestions?

I don't have suggestions for a specific model, but I really like Dell for laptops. I have one that's over 5 years old and still ticking. I bought my wife a business laptop for grad school two years ago and it's still working great.

That 1005PE will do fine as long as you don't mind the small screen.. The touchpad has a scroll section that works well so I don't mind the screen. The keys are about the same size as a normal keyboard but the less important keys have been slightly re-sized to make it more compact.. Typing is easy with it. That 11 hour battery life is with wireless off, screen bright all the way down, and with the CPU throttled down in power saving mode.. I typically see around 6 hours of life everything blazing full speed.

I figured there would be stipulations to get that 11 hours.

There is another Asus like that but it's a 12'' as opposed to 10'' for $480

I don't necessarily want to get her a huge laptop with the numpad on it.  13-14'' will be plenty.

I just don't really know what the good brands are for build quality are these days.

Also has anyone else used those online warranties you can buy for your laptops, squaretrade is it?

I have a Squaretrade warranty on my TV. Haven't had to use it yet, but a lot of people swear by them. If you do go the route of Squaretrade, look online for a discount. There's almost always a discount code posted on Slickdeals.

Any thoughts on these two?
Lenovo Ideapad G550 2958-9PU 15.6-Inch Laptop

Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4036 LED TruBrite 14-Inch Laptop
A lot of reviews comment on how loud the Toshiba is, never had a toshiba copmuter product so I don't know how well they hold up.

The Toshiba looks like it will be a bit faster. The Lenovo has a dual core processor but the cache is only 1 MB. The Toshiba has a triple core Phenom with 1.5 MB which gets a higher benchmark score than the Lenovo's processor. It has a larger harddrive, too. The reviews are very favorable for the Toshiba and it looks like a solid laptop. I would go with that one.

I was leaning toward that one also.  Thanks.

40% off Squaretrade Warranties (max $40) if you're interested.

Yea I did the 40% one for liking it on facebook yesterday (saw it on slick deals)
