Planning a trip for next summer (hopefully)
« on: June 08, 2018, 05:31:14 PM »
Been trying to get this together for years now.  It will involve the cities of (in this order):

1. Norfolk, VA
2. Wilmington, NC
3. Spanish Fort, AL
4. La Porte, TX
5. Los Angeles, CA
6. Fall River, MA (with another stop in Charlestown)
7. Camden, NJ

Then home.  Anyone want to guess what those cities all have in common (except Charlestown, that has something a little similar but very different)?

Not sure what they have in common. But, my parents live in Fairhope, AL.  I believe just south on the same Exit off I-10 from Spanish Fort.  Been there many times. Also, I grew up and lived in Chipley, FL(exit 120).  No longer there now though.

Where I'm going is actually in Mobile.  Each of those cities has a WWI or WWII battleship.  When I complete that, I'll have been on every museum BB in the US (I was on Missouri in 2014), I'll have been on the only surviving Dreadnought left in the world (Battleship Texas...the rest of the BBs are all Super Dreadnoughts).  While I'm up visiting Battleship Massachusetts,  I'm also going to see the USS Constitution which is currently, the only frigate in the US Navy, the oldest commissioned ship in the US Navy (second in the world), and the only active duty ship in the US Navy that has sunk an enemy ship.

Here's the planned route (though I've decided to actually start and end on the New Jersey as opposed to starting on Wisconsin):

Super cool. I've been to the one in Mobile of course. I was also in the Navy for a little while. But, only on two different LHD's. The Essex(LHD 2) & Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6).

Nice!  How long are you planning to take for the trip?  Traveling solo?

I was figuring maybe 2 weeks, and yeah, it'd be a solo trip.

Aside from the ship visits, are you planning to see anything else along the way?  If you're taking your Jeep, I could direct you to some trails in CA that are both scenic and will also get you to where you're going.

Yeah, I'm going to try and talk my buddy in Vegas to go with me to see a Diamondbacks game, or maybe a Dodgers game.

Will do.  The money has to be there too.

Hopefully, if I can manage to arrange the trip, the weather will be nice.  Cross country with the top down on my Jeep would be awesome.

Wait till June so hyper-intense tornado season passes in the central states.  I drove through a tornado producing storm in Nebraska in 1997, it's nutters.

I might also suggest staying on I-90 and going to Mt. Rushmore and Devil's Tower, then diving south.  If you haven't seen them already, they're distinctive and awesome monuments.  You're almost there and both can been seen in 1-1.5 days.

Also, I'll join you and Maverick for a beer in LA.  I hate going to LA but I've never met anyone from this forum in person.  I'll buy a round.  (Or 3!)  It'll be a mini-meet!

I'm actually contemplating September now.  Tourist season is largely over, and roads will be clearer.  Plus, L.A. during tourist season and when school is out is probably no fun as far as getting around town.
