I'm coming back bitches...
« on: August 07, 2017, 09:33:31 PM »
Flying in to LA in late April next year.
Planning a cruise to Alaska from Seattle, then maybe driving back from Mount Rushmore, through Yellowstone to SLC (see some family) then back to LA via Vegas.

Doing the touristy things in LA (Disney, legoland and down to San Diego) then back out from LA in late May

Planning on about 3 and a half weeks in the land of the free.

Anything I should be looking at not missing?  Going to do a tour of the Boeing factory in Seattle before leaving on the cruise.

While in Seattle, visit one of many Safe injection sites for illegal drugs. I bet you do not a safe place to shoot up heroin in Australia. Not even in Adelaide.

The Boeing Museum is worth a visit, it's probably one of the best museums I've been to of any variety but I'm also an engineer so I'm biased.  It'll eat up a whole day if you like to read the exhibits.  Plus you can walk on a Concorde.

I don't know if you have Daylight Savings Time in Oz but it'll be in effect when you're here, so that'll give you a little more light into the evenings.

Plan on 2 days to drive from Seattle to Mount Rushmore, and you lose an hour due to a time zone change.  If you're going from there to Yellowstone, check out Devil's Tower.  It's a little out of the way but a neat place to stop.  Cody, WY is also a neat town to stop and stretch your legs (and fill your tank) before Yellowstone.  Plan on snow in April.  The drive along the Beartooth Highway is absolutely gorgeous (and delightfully curvy) but will likely be closed that early in the season.  If it's open, drive it.  Most bison are in the NE corner of the park.  You won't see a moose, but there are more in Grand Teton NP just south.  Yellowstone is enormous so give yourself some time to see it.  Don't jump in the thermal features!

If you're not burned out on outdoor stuff, you'll pass near enough to Bryce Canyon and Zion NP's from SLC to LV.

I would also recommend at least a drive through Death Valley when you leave Vegas.  It'll add a few hours to your drive but I think it's worth seeing, plus April will be a good time of year to visit with cooler temps.

April should be a decent time to hit the tourist spots in LA and SD.  Spring Break sees some families but it won't be swamped like it would starting in May.  It'll also be cooler here than you might expect, but if you're here during a Santa Ana Wind day it'll be warm, super clear, and single digit humidity.

If you're in L.A., visit the Battleship Iowa at San Pedro Pier in the port of Los Angeles.  I was on her sister ship, Missouri, in Hawaii.  They are awesome and impressive ships.

Also while in Seattle, if you decide to go up the Space Needle that's cool and all, but if you want an actual seriously cool view you should go up the Columbia Tower instead.

The chance of snow should be fairly low by then, unless you're in the higher elevations.

Fullsize from LA to SEA - from Alamo, they seem to get a good review online
And then an SUV in Orlando as we are meeting friends there and will need a bigger car.

So I've been getting mixed messages on the road conditions in late April.
We're booked into seeing Yellowstone on the 24th (from memory) and then was planning to drive from West Yellowstone, through Missoula, Spokane to Seattle.
Most of this is on the I90...

The interstates are always plowed aren't they?  I'm not worried about driving in cold/slightly snowy conditions but full on snow is something I've never had to deal with.

Thoughts?

Interstates are definitely going to be plowed in the event of snow but in late April I don't think there's much to worry about. That's not to say it's impossible but I would think it's pretty unlikely.

Interstates will be clear unless you get a late season blizzard but that's not likely.  It looks like you'll have some driving on US highways (non-interstate) that would be cleared as priority but you are in a pretty remote part of the country.  At least from West Yellowstone you'll have a few choices of roads so in the unlikely chance one is blocked there will be alternatives.  Chances are you'll be alright.

I used to live in Chicago (lots of snow) and I've driven in a lot of snow here in Virginia.  Slow down, give lots of space between cars, and no sudden movements...unless you're Nick and purposely trying to spin   It isn't as bad as you might think.  You just have to be careful.

So Hellcat Challenger, red key and a heavy right foot are probably not recommended?

So, anyone been to Spokane WA?

We're thinking it might be where we aim to overnight on the way from Yellowstone to Seattle.

Hotel recommendations?  Other places we should aim for instead?
