1995 Eclipse GSX
« on: February 27, 2017, 11:25:47 AM »
Just picked up a 95 GSX in Maryland on Saturday for $4,500.

The body is in pretty good shape (paint could use a good cut and polish) other than a dent in the passenger fender and a little spot of bubbled rust on the hatch. The interior is fine other than the seats being pretty rough.

There's some stuff that I need to work on to make it more driveable. The PO removed the ISC because it failed so now the car won't idle until warmed up - it's very dumb considering you can buy a cheap new one for $25 or a good rebuilt unit for $80. It was a real pain to get it on and off the trailer. The clutch needs to be adjusted (it grabs way too high) and the brakes need to be adjusted/bled/rebuilt (not sure yet - the pedal is soft but they work). I've got everything in the mail to get an ISC installed again. It needs a good tune - when the HX35 finally kicks in goes lean.

Mod list:

-Suspension-
LSD rear end
Lowered on tokico blue struts and Megan springs
New front lower control arms

-Engine-
7bolt engine - 150 compression across
Ported Head with BC valve train
Arp Headstuds
GSC S2 Cam

-Drivetrain-
5 speed trans with new axle seals
ACT 2600 clutch kit w/ 2500k miles Fidanza flywheel
SS clutch line, new slave and master
New drivers side axle and wheel bearing

-Turbo-
Holder HX35 Turbo(7Blade)
T3 Manifold
Tial wastegate with dump tube
VRSF fmic Kit with Tial 50mm bov and GM iat sensor

-Fuel-
1200cc PTE injectors
DW300 fuel pump

-Electronics-
DSM Link v3 tuned on speed density
Aem X-Series wideband
autometer boost gauge
LC-2 Wideband
Innovate Oil Pressure

-ETC-
Solid trans shifter bushings and solid shifter base bushings
Thermal Catback
2gb front end conversion

I do have the (unpainted) front bumper - I had to take it off to get the car far enough on the trailer to install the straps. I also had to climb out of the sunroof and then back in through the hatch because it's low and the doors don't open on the trailer.

Also the stupid green decal has been removed. I ordered a plastic razor blade scraper so that I can remove the stupid black decal.

What part of Maryland did you pick this up? That car looks awfully familiar.

Ps, wanna race the GTI?

Let's go with just one "much". This turbo is capable of 400hp with a good tune and that's about my limit. More than that and shit starts to break a lot more often. Plus the bottom end is still stock and I'd prefer not to blow that up just yet.

Frederick. And yes I would race the GTI in a heartbeat once this thing is sorted out. ;D

I love having the garage but there's some weird issues with the floor being uneven. I didn't notice it when we looked at the house because there was a bunch of stuff in the garage. Unfortunately I wasn't there for the inspection either (we were living 4 hours away) and somehow the inspector didn't notice it. I would love to have the floor torn up and a new one poured but that's money I don't want to spend right now.

Pretty sure you'd win that one. If you're pushin 400, yea, uh

And it could be worse, my 2 car garage has a gravel floor with conveyor belt on it.

"CYBERTUNINGKID"  :lol:

Hope you're leaving that :P

Looks like a pretty decent find.
$4500 sounds high to me but then again - I'm used to buying 1g's. These days finding a 2g without rusted strut towers is challenging. And it doesn't look like it has been overly molested/16a'd.

Hopefully with some TLC and a good tune on it it'll see around 400whp - should be good for it!

It's "CYBERTUNINGMD". Not much better but "KID" would be awful. And no, that shit is coming off ASAP. The green windshield sticker is already gone. He said he works at a tuning shop so I guess he fancies himself a tuner. We'll see when I have someone go through and destroy the tune.

I was hoping he would take $4,000 but no go. I did tell him he had to ship me the old spoiler (it's removed) since I'm giving him $4,500. It's at the shop and he didn't have access before I bought the car. It was less than 24 hours after deciding on the car before we drove down.

But you're right that it's tough to find one without rusted strut towers. Plus he used real name-brand parts (as far as I can tell) like Tial and Holset instead of eBay knock-off garbage.

And it's white.

Better. The bumper is on and the stickers are removed. The downside is I had to polish the skirt to fix the paint discoloration from the sticker and now it's the nicest part of the car.

Still working on the idle though. The FIAV is here, new gaskets, and bypass plate. Still waiting on the ISC - it will be here Saturday. I'm hoping to get it finished this weekend so that I can register the car and get the inspection/emissions done.

I'm also not that deep yet. I know there will be some dumb wiring shit once I start getting into it.

I got the FIAV bypass + new ISC installed. The car started up and the idle grabbed immediately but it was really high and nothing I did made a difference. I took the car around the block after it warmed up for a while and the idle was jumping up and down at stops - I checked ECMLink and the car was going into open / closed loop over and over again at idle.

I got my tuner to take a look at it tonight and he straightened everything out for me. He said the tune was all sorts of wrong which doesn't really surprise me - it didn't seem like the guy knew what he was doing.

Now that the car is driveable I can get it registered and inspected. And then at least be able to drive it around to get used to it.

There's still little things that I need to do like get the wideband wired into the ECU so that it can be logged and properly tuned.

I don't think he drove it much or even had it very long. He has a Corolla for his daily, an automatic GSX, and two non-working Evos.

Just long enough to cobble a few things, lol. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this!

PS, also looking forward to seeing how this would be against the GTI, hopefully APR Stage 1 by spring

Well the car is running pretty smooth so that's a good start but it desperately needs a tune. Just a couple pounds of boost and I see the A/F ratio dip into the 9s.

The PO installed two widebands on this thing - Innovate LC2 and AEM X-Series. Apparently the LC2 is wired into the ECU but the sensor died so he hooked up the AEM instead of spending $50 on a new sensor. The AEM isn't wired to the ECU so it can't be logged and you can't properly tune it.

I just ordered a new sensor for the LC2 for < $50 and I'll be picking it up tomorrow. I need to get the car in the air (off comes the front bumper again...) to see if he tied up the harness for the wideband. Based on what he said, I should be able to just hook up the new sensor, do a free air calibration, install it, and good to go. We'll see.

Haven't updated in a little while. I've been driving the car on the weekend when the weather is nice and it's a lot of fun. Looks like the wastegate spring is 15 lbs. The dump tube sounds so angry when it kicks in - I love it.

I've been fixing little stupid shit when I can. I think the PO might be retarded - not sure. The way he ran the wires for the widebands... what the fuck. And the oil pressure wire was touching the driver's axle. Just dumb.

I did get the new LC2 sensor installed and the gauge is working fine but ECMlink isn't getting a reading. I texted the PO and he confirmed it's wired to the rear O2 ECU input but it's not working. Now I get to dig in and figure out what he did. I have to swap out the radio anyway so I'll do it all at once. It still has the stock radio which is "okay" because it has an aux input but the volume button doesn't work properly.

I also picked up a new 3 ton low profile jack from Harbor Freight so I don't have to pull the front bumper when I need to put the car up in the air. It even has room to spare!

Finally got around to working on the car some more.

It runs pretty hot on hot days - it hasn't overheated but it goes above 220* when stuck in traffic which is pretty toasty. I drained the radiator, refilled with distilled water + water wetter, and ran it to bleed the system. I haven't driven it yet but that combination should really help.

I'm going to try to find new top radiator hose too. I want one at a different angle - you can see in my signature image that it's extremely close to the exhaust manifold.

I did a boost leak test as well - first one since I bought it.

* Both throttle body gaskets leak (rough shape and not even the correct gaskets)
* IAT sensor leaks (bad bung threads - I destroyed them removing the IAT)
* Base idle set screw leaks (I replaced the o-ring but it still leaks - I need to try some dielectric grease)
* FPRV leaks at both adjust nut and vacuum fitting
* Injector #1 seal leaks (I pulled it and it's pinched so I ordered a full set of seals + o-rings)

I suppose it could be worse for a relatively unknown car. With the things I've already found from the previous owner, none of it surprises me.

Injector seals/o-rings are replaced, dielectric grease is applied to the BISS o-ring, TB gaskets are replaced, and the valve cover gasket + spark plug gaskets have been replaced. I noticed a little bit of oil pooling in the spark plug cover well so I figured it would be a good idea to replace it. Unfortunately there's now two valve cover bolts missing - one was too short and just sitting in the hole and the other just drops into the threads... pretty sure it needs to be helicoiled.

Tomorrow I'll have the 3/8" NPT tap to try to fix the IAT threads. It's just the first two threads that are toast so there should be enough meat left to properly thread and seal the sensor.

Still not sure what I can do about the FPRV. Maybe a little Permatex grey.
