1999 S10
« on: June 10, 2016, 04:57:46 PM »
Needed a beater truck for the occasional hauling/spare vehicle. 148K on the 2.2 4 cylinder, 5 speed. Slow as balls, but reliable and easy to work on. No major rust, I did notice changing the oil today it is going to need front brake lines before too long, but other than that it's a decent one owner truck.

Nice little truck especially with the 5-speed. If I didn't get my full size Silverado, I would have been looking for an S10.

This is the model S-10 I still dream about stuffing an LS motor in.  I dunno, I just want to do it.  Keep it stock outside. Even those same wheels. Maybe Extreme wheels, but still stick with an OEM wheel.  Nothing crazy, the LS would be stock or close to it.  Just seems like it would be a lot of fun and probably still as reliable too?

That's probably what I would do if this motor would go. All I would want is the 4.8, and I know they're a dime a dozen.

Hang onto this, these S10's are die hard. That motor may be a dog but it WILL NOT die. My friend Jessica had one, lost cylinder #3 so they parked it in a field. 3 years later they put a battery in it and drove it out.

I do plan on keeping it a while, or atleat until rust gets it. Something to help keep miles off the Camry or Jetta too. It doesn't like going up the mountain (14%) very well. You gotta get a running start and then try and get it back down into 3rd gear  The syncros are getting a little worn and sometimes you gotta double clutch 3rd and 4th.

Removed the goofy graphics the other day, unfortunately they etched themselves in some spots. I plan on repainting those areas. The drivers door had a dent in it I wanted to fix anyways.

You should be able to wheel most of that out with some cutting compound. It's white paint, so swirling isn't going to be as noticeable.

Oh dude trust me, it ate the paint. I'm in the process of gathering materials to repaint it.

I still want to build a S-Blazer Xtreme with a LS engine.  It's not to love S10s...  If you build it right they will do anything you ask them to.

Looking good.  There's a black on around here on the side of the road for sale. Tempting.

More bodywork for the beater...

Hmm...

Got-dammit...

Fuck it, it needs new rockers. Some fiberstrand will get it through inspection. Trust me, I do better work than this, but this close to winter I'm not fooling with it.

Blown out rocker will fail inspection? I though rust was only an issue if it opened up into the cab of the vehicle.

Yea they're super anal. I know several people that couldn't pass due to rockers.

Wait, they fail you if the vehicle is too rusty??  Thank god, they don't do that inspection here, 89% of the cars in the state would be in the junkyard! LOL

It's not really an issue of "too rusty" (although the rockers thing is odd). The issue is when rust has caused a hole in the body that leads into the cab. If your fender rusts out, nobody gives a shit. If you have a 1" hole through your door, that's an issue.

Mmm paint fumes....

There is a little bit of dirt in the clear since I painted it in my garage, but for under $400 I can't ask for any better. Needs wetsanded, pinstripe, and put together and it's ready to rust again!

For that price I'm assuming you used an HVLP sprayer and not rattle can?

I'm not seeing it in person but the result looks pretty damn good to me.
