Once again, we enter the strange mind of Hideo Kojima and experience the manifestations of his batshit insanity.

Here, we have a story that's layers upon layers deep, nearly impossible to follow, coupled with top notch game play and fantastic graphics. The result? A fun, addicting open-world take on the MGS formula with some much needed updates that serves as a perfect appetizer for the full length MGS V: The Phantom Pain.

Appetizer is a perfect word, because you can complete the entire main mission in about 30 minutes once you learn all the tricks to staying hidden. Do not spend money on this game, it is absolutely what was once considered a demo, and it's insultingly limited on content for the asking price of $20.

It is currently free on PS Plus for June, and that's the only reason I downloaded it.

So, I'm going to ignore the pointlessly convoluted story - you all know it's fucking ridiculous, this is Kojima we're talking about.

That said, this is somewhat of a "back to basics" exercise, in that there are no "super human enemies" of any type. Just soldiers with guns.

You play as Snake, aka Big Boss, and your mission is to infiltrate a secret Military base and extract two detainees. How you go about that mission is entirely up to you. You can burst in, guns a blazing, but don't expect to survive for too long... or play it the proper way and sneak around. You can be lethal, non-lethal, or bypass enemy contact altogether.

This is stealth gaming in its finest form.

Movement is very fluid. No longer do you have to press a button to stick to cover, now Snake will automatically press against cover when you get close. To leave cover, you just move away. Very smooth and natural feeling.

As always, creeping around and sneaking your way through the base is always the most exciting way to play, and this time you're equipped with a scope that you can use to survey the area and mark enemy/equipment locations on your augmented reality display. This works much like the camera in FarCry 3, and it's a very welcome addition.

The open world approach means that once you enter the base, you choose how to get to your objective, and then how to extract your targets, as well as where to call in the chopper to collect them.

To get the most satisfaction out of this, exploring and planning is essential. Survey the area, sneak around and unlock doors/gates, disable cameras in a discreet way (cutting off power will cause someone to investigate, but won't immediately indicate enemy activity). If done correctly, you can plan your infiltration based on information you've collected through your own observations, get a hold of your target, and escape again without anyone ever noticing. It's so, so satisfying to pull it off.

In the event you are spotted, however, you go into "reflex" mode where Snake will turn to face the enemy who spotted him, and you have a few seconds to quickly attack them to prevent them from calling for back up or firing their gun and alerting people nearby. This CAN feel like a cheater tactic, but A) You don't have to use it, and B) the first time you play, as you learn the game, you will WANT it.

When an enemy spots you from a great distance, he won't immediately recognize you as a threat, but he'll radio in that he's investigating suspicious activity. If you neutralize him before he radios in the all-clear, they will send someone to find out what happened to him, so your best bet is to wait until he's checked the area out and has given the OK before attacking him.

Hiding bodies is important as usual. Setting up traps with bodies is even better. Down an enemy with your tranq gun, and when the nearby patrol stops to check him out, take him out, too. Of course, setting a claymore near the incapacitated body is always hilarious.

And, well, that's pretty much it. Great stealth mechanics, beautiful graphics, bat shit insane overly convoluted story line.

What more do you expect from Metal Gear Solid at this point?

8/10

Are there cardboard boxes for mobile cover? I always loved that shit...a beta tester for Phantom Pain was on /v/ last night violating the fuck out of his Non Disclosure Agreement...that game is gonna be bad ass.

Nothing like that. Aside from the nutso story line, it's a pretty serious style of game.

Awwww even if it was a bit cheeseball I thought it was a neat mechanic to have mobile concealment like that.
