[Movie] John Wick
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:21:49 PM »
If you enjoy movies that allow you to root for a character who systematically destroys as many rotten people as possible in increasingly brutal ways, John Wick is a must see. Or, if you just like a good revenge/action flick, definitely check this out.

John Wick stars Keanu Reeves, playing  the titular John Wick, an ex-professional hitman whom is so divinely good at his trade that the MOB nicknamed him "the Boogeyman". Yeah, when the MAFIA checks under their beds for YOU... you're kind of a bad ass.

So when the Mob boss' stupid, arrogant son breaks into Wick's house, steals his Mustang and murders his puppy (a gift left to him by his dying, now deceased wife, no less), all out of some sort of twisted cosmic coincidence, Mr. Mob Boss becomes very frightened and essentially throws money at people to take out John Wick before John Wick murderizes the entire mob.

What follows is a series of excellently choreographed shoot outs, tense cat and mouse situations and oh-so-gratifying revenge.

One of the very cool things about the film is that it has managed to create this entire universe, set up a large back story and lore, and it doesn't have a narrator explain it - the lore reveals itself naturally throughout the film, and it's really, really cool. A hotel that serves as "international waters" for professional assassins, with a code of conduct and everything, a company that shows up to clean up and dispose of the dead bodies after a gun fight, police who intentionally turn the other way even if they flat out see a dead body on the floor of John Wick's home - the movie is just full of great stuff that answers so many of those "how" and "what if" questions some of us might have while viewing a less thoughtful action film.

The cinematography is great, the acting is great, and Keanu is very much a total bad ass.

What's funny to me is that this movie is almost the perfect Hitman (the game) movie. Change a few things about it, and it pretty much is. There are moments in the film that are very, very clearly inspired by the game play in those games.

Anyway, great movie, starts off a little slow to build the scene, but after that it's going to have your attention until it's through. Go watch it.
