[CD] Slipknot- .5 The Gray Chapter
« on: October 23, 2014, 01:13:48 PM »
This is first Slipknot album since I think like 2008? All Hope Is Gone was a decent album and almost made me forget all about the embarrassment that was Vol. 3. But then Paul Gray OD'ed and died, and Joey Jordison got fired. This boded bad for the band since Paul was one of their primary song writers. But man...they really came back with a vengence. I had pretty much written them off at this point as just being a heavier version of Stone Sour, and lacking in the raw just pissed off energy that made Iowa so great. But they managed to take the good elements from Iowa (the heaviness) the Self Titled (the grooves and Sid) and All Hope Is Gone (soaring song structures and choruses) and mash it all together in tribute to Paul. There are quite a few super heavy tracks, but they also use the clean choruses to great effect. If this would have come out after Iowa, it would have be amazing.

7/10

Haven't given this a listen yet because I've heard a lot of shitty stuff about Joey leaving and whatnot, good to here that it actually turned out ok.

And bro.  Bro.

What was wrong with Vol 3?

Vol 3 was a terrible follow up to Iowa, which was a legit heavy as fuck record...there was too much Stone Sour bleed over on that record. There are a couple of songs I like on it, but as a whole it wasn't a Slipknot album at all...it was too poppy and like happy at times.

I didn't have much of a problem with it, and I'm not really a Stone Sour fan myself.

If they would've made a heavy record again, it would've just been Iowa 2.0, ya feel me?

Too much of a good thing...

Iowa is easily my favorite Slipknot CD though.

My Plague and Left Behind are amazing.

I'm different, I tend to like when bands step outside the norm, as long as the results are actually shit. There's some good songs on Vol 3, maybe not Slipknot songs, but songs I can listen to and enjoy nonetheless.

Yeah, there were good SONGS on it...but coming off of Iowa, an album I could listen to (and still do) all the way through it kinda irked me. I do like the two Vermillion songs and a couple of the songs towards the end of the album. All Hope Is Gone was better, and a lot more listenable to me, I only skip a song here and there...and despite my first impression when I heard there was a damn acoustic song on the album I do really like Snuff. The new one is so far an all the way through listen to me, so I'm gravitating more back towards being a fan.

I really, really like Gently...its so fucking almost creepy at first then just gets heavy as fuck. People=Shit is also a really fun song, and so is Disasterpiece. The Shape is another on I'm extra fond of. I still really like The Heretic Anthem as cheeseball as that song is...probably mostly High School nostalgia...

I'm having trouble getting in to that album...I love all of their stuff aside from the little weird 3 album Nu Metal shit fest they got pressured in to by their label, but Bloodstone and Diamonds is just different...I'm gonna have to give it another shot.
