Title: [Car Parts] OBX Axle-Back Exhaust for Mazda 6
Post by: angry hampster on March 27, 2013, 10:21:22 PM
My stock exhaust had developed a leak at the flange due to rust and a crappy gasket. I snapped one of the bolts trying to fix it a few months ago and made the problem worse.

Replacing both stock mufflers was going to be around $200 for new OEM or good-condition used parts. Throwing that much cash, I decided to shop around for aftermarket parts. Cat-back systems for the first-gen 6 run anywhere from $550-1200 depending on brand and materials. Axle-back parts are available from only 2 manufacturers: Racing Beat and OBX.  The RB is $450, the OBX $250.

Racing Beat is a well known Mazda tuner and OBX is a small operation whose motto is "SHIT IS GOOD." I'm not even kidding.

Having never seen their products first-hand I looked around online for reviews. Most of the reviews I found raved about the products. High-quality craftsmanship, solid materials, good prices. One specific review on a Mazda forum was from a guy who had owned the RacingBeat axle-back system but it was damaged in an accident and had to be replaced. He decided to try out the OBX, and said it looked and felt like a carbon copy of the Racing Beat parts.

Seems like he's right. These mufflers are easily as good as Magnaflow parts I've used on my previous two vehicles. The stainless looks great, the welds are perfect, and the flanges are solid. The sound is fantastic. The 2.3 MZR is not a particularly good-sounding motor. The OBX exhaust gives a deep, rich tone with zero rasp or drone. It's just loud enough to know that it's not stock and get a little enjoyment out of it.

I forgot to take my camera out when I swapped the mufflers this afternoon. Will try to get some pics this weekend. Count me as one VERY satisfied customer. I'd recommend OBX to others looking for cheap, simple exhaust systems.

$250? The V6 ones appear to be $599...
