Title: Quicktime Playback Is Shit
Post by: wantahertzdonut on October 08, 2012, 10:31:59 PM
My camera records movies in MP4 format and when running through Quicktime to watch, it's about as jerky as porn on dial-up.  I avoid Apple stuff like the plague but now I'm stuck with it.

My computer is about 5 years old and runs Windows XP.  Is there a compatibility issue here?  Any ideas how I can resolve it?  It's getting annoying not being able to watch GoPro videos and any video I make on my camera.

You shouldn't need to use Quicktime. Download K-Lite Codec Pack (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm) and install it. It's bundled with Media Player Classic Homecinema. Make sure you use that. I started and haven't looked back.

Are you playing them back directly from your camera, or do you move the files to your computer hard drive first?

I had a similar issue where I tried to open the video file directly from a USB thumb drive and it ran at like half speed but as soon as I copied it to the hard drive it was normal again.

Just downloaded VLC Player. Plays basically every format under the sun, and is a very light program.

Worth a shot. I don't know about its compatibility with MP4 but it should work. The beauty of VLC is that it usually doesn't care about codecs.

VLC basically has every codec built into it. I play MP4s with no issue at all. I have yet to come across a video file I can't play on it, and I get a lot of different stuff at work...

I had issues with some .mkv files with high bitrates.

I'll try Kalgorn's and JD's suggestions of the player and codec downloads.  Just haven't had much time today; I've been getting my bike ready for the track this weekend.

Nick-  I've been having trouble on both the SD card and when I downloaded it to the hard drive.  I don't think I can play directly from my camera but it would be just like going through a USB connection.

Maybe I misunderstood.. is it more of a frame rate issue like a graphic intensive video game on an old computer, or is it like when you watch a Youtube video on a slow connection - it stops briefly to load?

As an update, I've been using this since you posted and it works pretty well.  Not 100% perfect but more than good enough for my taste.
