Title: Cable modem
Post by: Mr. Luos on September 23, 2012, 07:24:31 PM
Tired of wasting money "renting" one from Comcast.

Recommendations?  Doesn't need to be anything special, just reliable and able to handle home cable bandwidth.
Thanks!

The Motorola SB6121 (http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SB6121-SURFboard-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B004XC6GJ0) is top-tier for Comcast. Not sure what modem they've been raping you for but the Motorola is great. I bought one right before we moved to CT because Comcast wouldn't allow me to use my awesome Cisco modem. I purchased mine barely used from eBay for $65.

If you don't want the Motorola, just run down the approved modem list for Comcast (http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/) and get anything that's DOCSIS 3.0 ready. There's a checkbox at the top of the list to only show 3.0 devices.

I have the 6121 and comcast and I must say it works, and works well. I have had zero problems with the thing.

I was looking at the 5101 from Motorola.  Ideas?

It's not a DOCSIS 3.0 modem so I would pass. DOCSIS 3.0 is the new standard and allows for faster speeds, especially during peak times. Older modems can only work with one channel. With DOCSIS 3.0, the modem can bind to 4 or 8 channels (depends on the modem and your ISP).

When I was in Florida and had Cox for an ISP, the modem they originally gave me was DOCSIS 2.0 and my speed in the morning was great (~24 mbps). Into the evening, there were times where I would be under 1 mbps which is borderline unusable anymore. I bought another modem (same thing) after a year hoping that would help and it still sucked. About six months before we left Florida, I made Cox give me a brand new, DOCSIS 3.0 modem because of all the issues I had. Cured everything. My morning speeds were over 30 mpbs and in the evening, I wasn't seeing much of a drop at all.

I really recommend the SB6121 or other DOCSIS 3.0 equivalent. It's worth the extra $30 or so.
