Title: So, drove away from my work today...
Post by: Onyx Dragon on August 03, 2018, 09:07:17 PM
...for the last time.  I've been working there for 13 years, but now I'll be working elsewhere.  Seemed kind of strange driving away knowing I'll never be there as an employee again.

Also a bit nervous moving to another job after doing this one for 13 years.

Yea that's a strange feeling. I still have the same employer, but next week I move a a new office 500mi away from my current one. eerie but I'm looking forward to it.

Congratulations, Onyx! I'm sure the new job will be a big step in your career. Does new job have better pay, benefits and a shorter commute? However do you enjoy the work you do? Don't feel nervous at all. Feel good that traded up and climbed a few steps on your ride to top.

I do talk some rubbish

Commute will be a little longer, but with a 34% pay increase, it's worth it.  Definitely better benefits.

The work I do hasn't be true technical work for years.  The job I'm moving to puts me squarely back into tech work.  In addition, the job I was at was originally Qwest, bought out by Centurylink, who then bought out Savvis and we changed our name to Savvis for a bit, then back to Centurylink, then the hosting division was sold to Cyxtera.  Cyxtera is largely an investment group, so I would imagine in the next 1-3 years we'd be sold again.  The future there is questionable as far as who I'd end up working for again.

As for being nervous, I am.  Buddy of mine pulled some strings to get me where I'm going, so I really want to make sure I do well there.

It's been a while since I left a job and it is a strange feeling.  But my old job situation grew very caustic so I was happy as hell to leave.  I wheelied a little in the parking lot on my way out.

So 6 months now, and pretty happy.  I'm in at 6, off at 2 (or 2:30 if I take a lunch).  Make a lot more money.  My lead pretty much just lets me go.  He'll say "Hey, we need this done" and I'll ask any questions I have or just say OK, and he lets me go off on my own.  They hired a second hardware guy who's not very experienced with this stuff, so my lead assigns us work and then doesn't care if I give it to him so long as it gets done right.

For a while I had contemplated leaving the tech field.  The friend that got me this job told me to try it out, see if it makes me happy doing the work again.  Amazing how actually doing tech work makes a difference.

Glad to hear!  I hope things only get better.

It helps having a good boss to.  My old job was probably more interesting, but I wanted to kill my old boss.  I'm quite good friends with my current boss and it makes a world of difference.  I'm in at 6 and am quite ok with that, and I'm not a morning person.

Good to hear Onyx!

I recently jumped ship myself, but in the same career field I was in (Industrial Maintenance Technician). I was scared shitless at "starting over" but in the end I'm pretty sure it's worth it. Like you much more money, benefits out the ass (even have a pension plan), and only have to work 4 days a week (9pm to 7am). I can also transfer wherever they have a hub location around the country at any time.
